A Credit Counsellor:

Regard the well-being of the person served as the primary professional obligation
• Respect the dignity, worth, and integrity of every client
• Respect the client’s right to self-determination
• Protect the client’s right to privacy and confidentiality
• Provide competent service in accordance with established standards of professional practice and conduct
• Offer services to all individuals regardless of income level
• Advocate, when appropriate, for the rights and interests of the client
• Encourage clients to develop the ability to manage their own financial affairs
• Ensure that professional responsibility to the client takes precedence over personal interests or values
• Respect the rights and interests of third parties
• Ensure that all financial assessments are fair, objective, and unbiased
• Limit counselling to financial matters and refer non-financial issues to appropriate professionals when necessary
• Maintain and continually improve professional knowledge and skills in credit counselling and financial education
